New road repairs, cleanliness initiatives start ‘credit’ war between AAP government, LG

The Delhi government will implement a weekly action plan under which the city roads will be regularly repaired, maintained and cleaned by the Public Works Department (PWD) and civic bodies. The initiative, however, brought to the surface the ongoing conflict between Lt Governor VK Saxena and the AAP government – who is to be credited this time.

Announcing the action plan in the morning, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that every Saturday every agency will ensure that one road in each of its zones is repaired and is spotless. Kejriwal’s campaign announcement came after a statement from the lieutenant governor’s office said that Saxena hoped that an order for repair, maintenance and cleaning of “one road per zone/division every week” issued on Thursday on his instructions would be much needed and Long pending relief to the residents and commuters of Delhi.

An AAP government source said, “It is strange that the LG is fighting for credit on issues that come directly under the Delhi government, but to improve the law and order situation, to improve the cleanliness of Delhi, or in the MCD.” They have miserably failed to control corruption.” Delhi government’s weekly action plan to improve the city’s roads. Every Saturday, every agency (PWD, MCD) will work towards making each road excellent in its jurisdiction,” Kejriwal tweeted.

The Chief Secretary’s order for the road maintenance drive comes after the LG’s meeting with the officials concerned earlier this week, the LG office statement said. “The lieutenant governor has also appreciated the smooth coordination between the various road-owning agencies by keeping the chief minister and deputy chief minister on board,” the statement said.

The repair and maintenance drive will maintain potholes, damaged blacktop pavement and central ledge, green cover, paint, street-lights, road reflectors as well as public utilities such as toilets and water ATMs, the statement said. Regular and continuous maintenance and cleaning of these roads will be done by removing garbage, C&D (construction and demolition) waste and silt from drains involving Market Welfare Associations (MWAs) and RWAs.

The action plan for the exercise will be placed before the LG by July 12 and will be reviewed at regular intervals. However, government sources said that the issue of road repair was discussed between the Chief Secretary and Public Works Minister Manish Sisodia two days ago. “It seems cheap for LG to fight for credit like this,” said a source.

According to an official notification, the city’s roads need attention from the concerned agencies like Public Works Department (PWD), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). The notification issued by Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar states that the progress of work will be uploaded on the portal by the organization concerned.

Once the roads are repaired, maintained or improved, the organization concerned shall ensure their regular cleaning and maintenance, it said. In a statement, the Delhi government said civic agencies, including the PWD, have been asked to ensure complete maintenance and repair of one road every week in their jurisdiction.

“Kejriwal Government is determined to provide an easy commuting experience to the residents of Delhi. For this, it is important to have well-maintained and clean roads that do not cause inconvenience to the residents,” said Deputy CM Manish Sisodia. He said that this initiative will help in making the city roads better, safe and beautiful.

This will be a continuous process which will continue as per the requirements of the roads. Sisodia said the agencies would submit weekly completion reports to the government.
