New IT Portal: Finance Ministry summons Infosys CEO Salil Parekh

New Delhi: The Union Finance Ministry on Monday issued summons to Infosys MD and CEO Salil Parekh, asking him to clarify the discrepancies in the new income tax e-filing portal.

The Income Tax department said that Parekh has been called to explain why the discrepancies were not resolved even after 2.5 months of the launch of the new e-filing portal.

The Income Tax Department further said that the portal is “not available” from August 21.

“Ministry of Finance has called Shri Salil Parekh, MD & CEO @Infosys on 23/08/2021 to the Hon’ble FM to explain why the discrepancies in the portal have not been resolved even after 2.5 months of the launch of the new e-filing portal. Actually, the portal itself is not available from 21/08/2021.’

Expressing concern over the issue, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had earlier in June asked Infosys to immediately fix all issues on the new income tax portal.

The new e-filing portal (http://www.incometax.gov.in) was launched on June 7.

However, the new income tax e-filing portal got off to a bad start from the day itself and many users said that they are facing problems in accessing it or facing other glitches.

Users flagging those issued often tweeted screenshots of the site and tagged the finance minister.

The trouble with the site has also hampered users during e-filing of tax returns, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier in 2019, Infosys was awarded a contract to develop the next generation income tax filing system to reduce processing time from 63 days to one day and expedite refunds.
