New Covid outbreak in China linked to Shanghai’s Tour Group of Seniors

The virus that triggered new outbreaks of Covid-19 linked to a tour group of senior citizens from Shanghai that has affected several regions of China, possibly stemming from overseas, Chinese health experts have said. Said that more than 20 positive cases are linked to the contacts of the group. Global Times reported that so far.

The group, which broke out into provincial areas to the north and northwest of China, likely came into contact with the virus, which may have come through port cities in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, though where exactly it came from and where it originated in China. How it came about is unknown, the health expert said.

Experts noted that prevalent Covid-19 variants such as those now circulating globally in Delta may survive longer on products in cold weather, triggering community transmission.

Beijing on Tuesday reported a locally transmitted Covid-19 case that returned to the capital from northwest China’s Gansu province, another case linked to a tour group that had spread the virus to seven provincial regions and cities by Tuesday, including Port cities were also included. Mongolia and the capital of Shaanxi Province.

The new case broke Beijing’s record for more than 70 days of any community-transmitted cases.

The patient was a close contact of a confirmed case from northwestern China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, nicknamed Ai, who in turn was a confirmed contact of the Shanghai Tour Group. The report said Beijing’s case was on the same train as the AI.

A couple from Shanghai, who were tested on Saturday in the capital of Shaanxi, Xi’an, were the first to test positive in this latest outbreak. The couple were part of a tour group with five other seniors, and had traveled to Gansu Province, Inner Mongolia and Shaanxi. Later, another five tourists also tested positive in Xi’an.

Two streets in Beijing’s Fengtai district have closed management, and people outside are advised not to go on the two streets.

The Fengtai district government said at a news conference on Tuesday that the district would increase the frequency of disinfection in public places, limit the number of visitors to indoor venues and restaurant opening hours.
