‘Never judge success by salary package’: President Droupadi Murmu’s advise to students

Kurukshetra (Haryana): President Draupadi Murmu on Tuesday attended the 18th convocation of National Institute of Technology (NIT) Kurukshetra and advised students not to judge success by their salary package. Addressing the students, the President said, “Getting a better salary package is a good thing, but it does not mean that a student who does not get a good salary is less deserving.” The President said that in the face of the technological revolution, the nature of jobs as well as the basic needs of the people are changing. “These changes are also challenging the existing methods of engineering. Given the changes taking place due to technological change, it becomes very important that our technical institutes including NIT Kurukshetra become ‘future ready’.”

The President said that NIT Kurukshetra is moving towards introducing futuristic courses like Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Robotics and Automation and Industrial Internet of Things. He further added that the institute has established a state-of-the-art ‘Siemens Center of Excellence’ where special emphasis is being laid on smart manufacturing, automation design and e-mobility.

The President said, “It is a matter of pride that NIT Kurukshetra is the first in North India and the second in the country to set up such a centre.” He also appreciated the contribution of Haryana and Punjab in the development of agriculture in the country. The progressive farmers of this region have made the Green Revolution possible by using modern technology and providing food security to the country. But today there is an increase in air and land. Pollution and depleting groundwater levels have emerged as major problems in the region,” President Murmu said.

He said that it is the responsibility of the institute to find technical solutions to these problems. The President said that technology is not only a by-product of science and engineering, but also has a social and political context. He said, “We all have to move forward with the thought of ‘Technology for Social Justice’. We should try that the underprivileged should not be left behind. Technology should be used to build an egalitarian society.”

The President said that students should not be bound by traditional notions of success, nor should they succumb to societal pressures. He urged them to choose a career that would give them satisfaction and a sense of meaning in life. Murmu also urged parents to inspire their children to strive for excellence, saying that by doing so, achievements would automatically come their way.
