Nepal Presidential Elections to be Held on March 9

KathmanduPresidential elections will be held in Nepal on March 9, said the Election Commission of Nepal. The Election Commission of Nepal has also decided to hold the Vice Presidential election on 17 March. Significantly, Nepal’s President Vidya Devi Bhandari is going to retire on March 13. His successor is being elected four days in advance. The election of the Vice President of Nepal is to be held a day before the retirement of the incumbent Nand Bahadur Pun. The Constitution of Nepal provides for the election of the President and Vice President through an electoral college consisting of members of both houses of the federal parliament and all seven provincial assemblies.

The weighting of the votes of the MPs of the Federal Parliament and the Provincial Assemblies is different. According to the Office of the President of Nepal, Vidya Devi Bhandari is the second President of Nepal after the Himalayan nation adopted a democratic-republican system.

According to the Office of the President of Nepal, Vidya Devi Bhandari is the first woman President to be elected by the Parliament on 28 October 2015 after the promulgation of the new constitution. She was elected for her second term on 13 March 2018 after the completion of her first term.
