21 killed, 24 missing due to post-monsoon rains in Nepal

According to local administration records, at least 21 people have lost their lives in the last 24 hours due to landslides and floods caused by the post-monsoon rains in Nepal, while about two dozen people are yet to be traced. Dhangarhi Senior Superintendent of Police Bikram Chand said, “Due to the landslide caused by incessant rains, a 32-year-old man died as his house collapsed in the early hours of Tuesday.”

According to officials in western Nepal, no casualties were reported till Wednesday morning, but hundreds of passengers were stranded due to landslides and road blockades.

In central Nepal, one person lost his life after a river was washed away in Sindhuli, the least-affected region, while other districts of Chitwan, Makwanpur were inundated due to heavy rains.

Federal Police Division, Dharan superintendent Bhim Dahal said two children died in Sunsari’s Dharan after a house collapsed following incessant rain.

Meteorologists have attributed the change in the weather patterns of the Himalayan nation to the simultaneous activation of two weather systems.

Nepal has recently observed the combined effects of low pressure systems operating in the Bay of Bengal and Central India (now moving north) and the Western Wind System.

Western Nepal, especially the Far West Province, has been badly affected by these weather systems.

Although a detailed assessment of the damage and damage is yet to be done, 12 districts are reported to be affected by the natural calamity. The Ministry of Home Affairs has mobilized Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force for relief and rescue operations in essential areas.

The Meteorological Forecasting Department (MFD) has predicted rain in different parts of the country.
