Nepal got new PM! Sher Bahadur Deuba sworn in as Prime Minister for the fifth time

Kathmandu: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba was on Tuesday sworn in as the Prime Minister of Nepal.

According to a report in ‘The Himalayan Times’, President Vidya Devi Bhandari had earlier appointed Deuba as the Prime Minister under Article 76(5) of the Constitution.

This is the fifth time that Deuba (74) has returned to power as the Prime Minister of Nepal.

His appointment is in line with the Supreme Court’s decision on Monday that confirmed his claim for the prime minister’s post by replacing KP Sharma Oli.

The report said that Deuba was informed about his appointment by the President’s Office.

Prior to this, Deuba has been Prime Minister four times – September 1995 – March 1997, July 2001 – October 2002, June 2004 – February 2005 and June 2017 – February 2018.

Deuba has to seek a vote of confidence in the House within 30 days of his appointment as prime minister under a constitutional provision.

The Supreme Court on Monday set aside Oli’s May 21 decision to dissolve the House of Representatives and ordered the appointment of Deuba as prime minister. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Rana had said Oli’s claim for the post of prime minister was unconstitutional.
