NEET-UG 2023: 19-Year-Old Maharashtra Student Ends Life Over ‘Low’ Marks

Nagpur: A 19-year-old student in Nagpur allegedly committed suicide after scoring less than expected marks in the highly competitive NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) exam, the results of which were released recently. Officials said student Bhavesh Teju Singh Rathore hanged himself with a rope tied to a ceiling hook in his room on Tuesday night. Rathod was originally from Karanja Lad tehsil of Washim district and had come to Nagpur to fulfill his dream of becoming a medical doctor.

He scored 588 marks out of a total of 720 when the results of the NEET-UG exam for admission to medical colleges were declared on Tuesday, the police officer said. The official said that upset over the less than expected marks, the teenager committed suicide. Sub-inspector Ravindra Chavan said a “suicide” note was found in Rathod’s room, citing his frustration over the low marks for the extreme step.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) declared the result of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) on Tuesday. Tamil Nadu’s Prabhanjan J. And Bora Varun Chakraborty from Andhra Pradesh has topped the exam with 720/720 marks or 99.99 percentile.

Among states, Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of candidates who have qualified, followed by Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Admission to MBBS as well as undergraduate medical programs like BDS, AYUSH courses, BHMS, BAMS, BUMS, BVSc and AH is done through NEET.

Candidates who appeared in NEET exam can check their result on the official website by using their application number and date of birth. NTA had conducted the NEET exam on May 7, in which more than 20 lakh candidates had appeared. It was held outside India in 14 cities – Abu Dhabi, Bangkok, Colombo, Doha, Kathmandu, Kuala Lumpur, Lagos, Manama, Muscat, Riyadh, Sharjah, Singapore, Dubai and Kuwait City. The exam was conducted in 13 languages ​​- Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.

Last year, around 18 lakh candidates applied for the exam. A total of 11.45 lakh candidates out of 20.38 lakh have qualified for the exam, which is 48 per cent more than last year.

Among states, Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of eligible candidates (1.39 lakh), followed by Maharashtra (1.31 lakh) and Rajasthan (over 1 lakh). Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra are the two most populous states in the country, while Rajasthan is also among the top 10 in terms of population. Kerala and Karnataka are the other two states in the top five, each with over 75,000 candidates clearing the exam.

The maximum number of candidates in the top 10 are from Tamil Nadu, which has been opposing the centralized medical entrance exam. Eight candidates in the top 50 are from Delhi, seven from Rajasthan and six from Tamil Nadu.
