NEET PG: Over 1,456 vacant seats, SC says, ‘playing with students’ future’

The Supreme Court on Wednesday reprimanded the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) on 1456 vacant seats. NEET PG-2021He said that if the students are not given admission, he will pass the order and also give compensation to them. A vacation bench of Justice MR Shah and Justice Aniruddha Bose told the counsel for MCC, “Even if the single course remains vacant… it is your duty to see that they do not remain vacant.”

The bench was irritated to learn that 1,456 seats in medical colleges were left vacant in the 2021-22 session. It said that the MCC and the Center are playing with the lives of the students by not conducting the mop up round of counseling for the students. The bench said, “You are playing with the future of the students…”

The bench told MCC’s counsel, ‘Why are you adding seats in the middle of the counselling? There should be a cut-off that as on date there are many seats…” The counsel for MCC submitted that the orders in the matter will have cascading effect and requested the court to allow an affidavit to be placed on record to explain the matter.

The top court insisted that the country needs doctors and super-specialty medical professionals, and told the counsel for the MCC that if the students are not admitted, it will pass an order and also compensate them. The top court directed the officials concerned to be present in the court tomorrow when it will pass orders in the matter. “We will pass orders to pay compensation… Who is responsible for this situation? …call your officer tomorrow…”, the bench said.

The bench further said, “We need doctors… Why is there no effective system? … Do you know the stress level of students and parents?”

The bench allowed MCC’s counsel to file his affidavit during the day and asserted, “These are very important matters relating to the rights of the students”.

The apex court made these observations while hearing a plea by a doctor, Atharva Tungatkar, who appeared for NEET PG-2021 and qualified it.

The petition, filed through advocate Kunal Cheema, states: “The petitioner is constrained to approach this court as the precious medical seats may be incomplete/wrongly filled and qualifying casualties may be caused, as by the respondent no.
