NEET 2021: Why students want medical entrance exam postponed

Medical college aspirants have been demanding delay in national level entrance exam for months National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). The medical entrance exam is scheduled to be held on September 12. This year the exam conducting body, National Testing Agency (NTA), has made serious changes in the exam including conducting the exam in 13 different languages, offering internal option as a relief to the students. However, none of the relaxations seem to be working and the online protests are still on as the issues of the students go beyond the pandemic and the fear of catching the disease.

One of the major issues highlighted by the students is that the NEET exam dates clash with other exams. The students also started the practice of “#delayNEETUG”. The date of NEET-UG is scheduled to be held on September 13 along with CBSE private examinations as well as other state and national level UG entrance examinations including ICAR, MHT CET 2021 will be conducted from September 4. From 10th to 14th to 20th September and CoMEDK on 14th September.

He has also cited the need of more time for preparation as the new exam pattern was announced two months before the exam. As per the new scheme, 200 multiple choice type questions will be asked from four sections- Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology. Out of 200, students will have to answer 180 questions. While the change in the exam pattern was announced in July 2021, students have taken to social media to demand the postponement of the exam as they need some more time to get used to the new pattern.

Some states like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal were hit by heavy rains and floods and internet connectivity was disrupted. Hence, many students from these regions could not fill the NEET-UG application form. They have requested to expand the application window for the same.

Another reason cited by the students is the change in the paper pattern announced just two months before the exam. So, students need time to prepare according to the new exam pattern.

Since admit cards will be issued three days before the exam, people living in remote areas may miss their paper as it will be difficult for them to arrange transport facility to reach the allotted exam venue in such a short span of time. Around 16 lakh students will appear for NEET-UG this year.

A third wave of COVID-19 is likely to hit the country and half the candidates are yet to be vaccinated. In such a situation, it can pose a threat to their health. Also, the students have quoted that the MBBS session will start in February 2022, so the exam can probably be conducted in October.

Students are continuously demanding the postponement using hashtags like #PostponeNEETUG and #PostponeNEETUG2021. A student tweeted, ‘Postponement of NEET-UG. When the concerns and demands of JEE students can be met, why can’t a legitimate concern of NEET aspirants be met?

This user said, “Sir[Dharmendra Pradhan]Please reschedule NEET UG. Please postpone for at least 10-15 more days. Sir, this is a humble request. We are all under a lot of stress from this clash of exams together. Please postpone for a few days so that NEET-UG can be conducted peacefully.”

Here are some reactions:
