CSK captain MS Dhoni said that bowlers need to be more aware of the situation and also indicated that the execution was probably ‘poor’.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered a 4-wicket defeat at the hands of Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Chennai on Sunday afternoon. Despite posting a mammoth score of 200, the four-time champions suffered a defeat after a stellar bowling performance. Opener Devon Conway hit an unbeaten 92 off just 542 balls but his efforts went in vain as the Shikhar Dhawan-led side silenced the Yellow Brigade by scoring the winning runs off the last ball.

Chasing the target of 201, Punjab needed nine runs in the last over. Pacer Mathisha Pathirana conceded just two runs in the first three balls but Sikandar Raza kept his composure under immense pressure and scored two runs each in the next two balls. Punjab ended at 201 for 6 as Prabhsimran Singh (42), Liam Livingstone (40), Sam Curran (29) and Jitesh Sharma (21) played crucial roles with bat in hand.

After the defeat, the CSK captain M S Dhoni Said that the bowlers needed to be more aware of the conditions and also indicated that the execution was probably ‘poor’.

“we lost it [the game] In the middle few overs. You have to be aware of what you have to bowl and be clear because the batsmen will be going for it (big hits). (Mathisha) Pathirana bowled well but apart from that we need to see whether the planning was wrong or the execution was poor.

Barring opener Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad (37), none of the other batsmen could make an impact and Dhoni felt his team could have scored 10 more runs.

We need to do better with the bat. There was turn in the pitch, there was some turn when it hit the seam. Slower balls took hold. I think, 200 (runs) were par. Also at the end of our innings, could we have 10 more?” he questioned.

Devon Conway, who won the player of the match award for his blistering knock, was also disappointed with the results.

Conway said, “We thought 200 was a very competitive total so were a bit disappointed that we lost it.”

He said, ‘When you hit the wicket, we thought it (the wicket) was a bit slow. I try not to make things too complicated. I try to keep things as simple as possible. I try and work with (batting coach) Mike Hussey as much as possible. Along with other players, we have got a lot of experience in our camp. Just try working with them,” he said.
