Ahmad and Ashraf were shot from close range by three men posing as journalists late on Saturday night while interacting with the media.

Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Kamal Nath on Sunday demanded a Supreme Court-monitored probe into the gunning down of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj a day earlier.

Ahmed and Ashraf, three men posing as journalists, were shot dead late on Saturday night while interacting with the media when police personnel were taking them to a medical college in Prayagraj for mandatory check-up.

“What kind of politics is happening in Uttar Pradesh and the country? One day someone is killed and the next day someone else. It is up to the society to think in which direction UP and the country is heading. The Supreme Court should take cognizance of this and order an inquiry.”

Hitting back at Nath, MP Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Narendra Saluja said that Nath should instead express grief over the people who were killed by Atiq Ahmed.

“Atiq was facing more than 100 criminal cases. It is shameful that Nath is demanding an inquiry into the murder of a man who killed many people and destroyed their families. Saluja said, Nath is taking the side of the mafia for the politics of appeasement.
