NCW slaps notice to Twitter to remove all obscene, obscene content within a week

New Delhi: A day after Delhi Police filed an FIR against Twitter for allegedly allowing access to child pornography, the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Wednesday asked the micro-blogging platform to clear “all obscene and obscene” content for a week. ordered to be removed.

Taking suo motu cognizance of obscene content on Twitter, NCW has given a week’s ultimatum to Twitter and directed Delhi Police to investigate and take appropriate legal action against the social media giant.

The Delhi Police on Tuesday registered a case against Twitter for child pornographic content following a complaint from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).

The complaint was against Twitter Inc and Twitter Communication India Pvt Ltd

According to news agency IANS, NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma has written to Twitter India Managing Director Manish Maheshwari to immediately remove all such obscene and obscene content from the Twitter platform within a week. He also wrote to the Delhi Police Commissioner to investigate the matter and take appropriate legal action.

“The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of a number of profiles sharing obscene material on Twitter,” the NCW said in a statement. The letter, accessed by the news agency, said, “The Commission on receipt of a similar complaint had earlier brought the matter to the notice of Twitter for immediate action, however, reportedly no action was taken by the platform.”

The Commission said, “The Commission is disturbed that despite being aware of the availability of such restricted content which not only violates Indian laws but also violates Twitter’s own policy, till date no action has been taken to remove it. No action has been taken.”

The Commission has shared with Twitter the details of certain profiles sharing obscene material on its platform and has directed to remove all such content within a week.

The callout by the NCW comes amid an ongoing tussle between the Center and Twitter over the new IT rules and according to officials the NCPCR complaint pertains to the alleged display of child pornographic material on the social media site.
