Nawazuddin Siddiqui Says OTT Has Been A ‘Dhanda’ For Producers: ‘Sadly, Quality Wasted’

He has been nominated at the 2021 International Emmy Awards in the Best Performance by an Actor category for Sudhir Mishra’s Netflix film Serious Men, but Nawazuddin Siddiqui is not very optimistic about the future of OTT in India.

The actor, who has been riding the initial OTT wave with his stellar performance in Sacred Games, feels that streaming platforms are no longer coming up with engaging content, “OTT started off really well and is a great opportunity for filmmakers and actors in India. Open the way The content we see on the streaming platform was different from what we see in theatres, and it had its own unique style. But now I feel it is losing its novelty. A lot of material is coming but the quality is absolutely bad (quality is ruined). Ek dum cliched ho hua hai (OTT has become cliched). You can compare it to a television series where you keep on dragging and making series after series.”

Siddiqui, who has worked on projects like Serious Main, Raat Akeli Hai and Ghoomketu which released on OTT platforms, complained that streaming platforms have turned into a business, “Big production houses have done lakhs of deals with streaming platforms. In the name of content, these production houses only come up with run-of-the-mill content. We have a habit of converting art into business and OTT has also become a business and production house sirf paisa kaam raha hai (OTT has become a money making business for the production house).

After Emmy nod, Kangana Ranaut calls Nawazuddin Siddiqui ‘one of the best actors in the world’

The actor said that many talented people need to be given a chance, “There are a lot of passionate filmmakers who deserve to showcase their talent. But they don’t get a chance. And the audience also wants to see good content but big production houses are churning out average and bad content. There was a time when OTT was not a monopoly but now everything is changing for the worse.”

Siddiqui, who is currently shooting for Heropanti 2 in London, is saddened by the plethora of content on the streaming platform, “There is no doubt that the OTT platform has given me a global presence. After Sacred Games, whenever I traveled abroad, many people would recognize me and even call me Ganesh Gaitonde (his character in Sacred Games). But sadly today the quality of the content has deteriorated. People are bored of watching the same thing now and that is the reason why we hardly watch any web series or film which has received wide appreciation in recent times.”

The actor revealed that he is staying away from OTT for the time being and also refuted the rumors of working with Bangladeshi actress Jaya Ahsan in a web series, “I am not doing any web series. These are all rumors and I have not signed anything. I am not interested in doing anything on OTT unless there is something that really excites me.”
