Nattu Kaka to Pelu and Saxena: The characters who proved less are more on TV

Comedy as an art form can be difficult to execute but if done in the right way it leaves a lasting impression. It’s no surprise that some of the most successful and memorable characters to emerge from the Indian TV scene, which are partly famous for hamming, over-the-top action-reaction scenarios and highly extended storylines, have been comedic.

Nattu Kakas

Ghanshyam Nayak played the character of Nattu Kaka in the long running TV show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. His stint on the show ended with his demise. However, it was heartening to see how a side character in an outfit was loved by fans for his natural performance as an overworked senior employee. Whenever Jethalal (Dilip Joshi) assigns Nattu Kaka a task he doesn’t want to do, he pretends not to listen and shouts, “Hey, did you say something to me? (Did you say something to me?)” Also the subtle change in expressions was something that added more flavor to this overall appeal.

Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai, the rickshaw puller in Pelu is a mute character. There is a very sarcastic part of him which he does entirely as a very different way of smiling, by showing off his front teeth. Pelu (Akshay Patil) is confined to just one or two expressions but his popularity proves that when done in the right way, less is more.

Anokhelal Saxena

Another character in Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai has gained immense popularity with the quality of saying “I like it”. Anokhilal Saxena (Saanand Verma) is portrayed as a madman who takes pleasure in being beaten up and enjoys physical torture every time. “I love it”, he says, with an irresistible charm to it. The character is not only well written and thought out-of-the-box, but portrayed equally well and unflatteringly by Sanand.

Khichdi Se Hansa (Supriya Pathak) is one of the cutest characters ever to emerge on Indian TV. It’s fun to watch his witty attempts to get the English right. Hansa’s specialty is her innocence. The friendship with her husband Praful (Rajeev Mehta), who is always ready to answer Hansa’s questions, are some of the highlights of the show.

Gopinath Gandothra

In the FIR, Head Constable Gopinath Gandothara (Gopi Bhalla) thinks he speaks the best English which will leave you in tears of laughter. He is always humiliated by his superior Chandramukhi Chautala (Kavita Kaushik), who also slaps him for his stupidity. The subtlety of Gopinath’s character lies in the unique style of dialogue delivery adapted to different situations that will leave you astonished.
