NATO says China’s ‘coercive policies challenge our interests’

The United States, the leading NATO power, has insisted the alliance to focus more on China, despite the reluctance of some allies to shift the focus away from Europe.

NATO said in its guiding blueprint for the first time on Wednesday that China could challenge the alliance and that Beijing’s close ties with Moscow went against Western interests.

“The People’s Republic of China (PRC) stated that ambitions and coercive policies challenge our interests, security and values,” said NATO’s strategic concept published at a summit in Madrid.

“It seeks to destroy the rules-based international order, including in the space, cyber and maritime domains.”

It accused China of targeting NATO members with its “malicious hybrid and cyber operations and its confrontational rhetoric”.

The United States, the leading NATO power, has insisted the alliance to focus more on China, despite the reluctance of some allies to shift the focus away from Europe.

NATO’s guiding documents – updated for the first time since 2010 – said Russia was “the most significant and direct threat to the security of allies” following the invasion of Ukraine.

And it said the increasingly close ties between Moscow and Beijing “contrary to our values ​​and interests”.
