National Medical Commission (NMC) has canceled the admissions done on UG and PG medical seats in three private medical colleges in Telangana. This has angered many students who are demanding official intervention in the matter. A total of 450 MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and one Bachelor of Surgery) seats were canceled by the commission along with some postgraduate medical seats.
The NMC has cited “lack of infrastructure and lack of faculty” for canceling the seats. It said 150 MBBS seats were canceled in three private medical colleges, namely MNR Medical College and Hospital, Sangareddy, Mahaveer Institute of Medical Sciences, Vikarabad and TRR Institute of Medical Sciences, Patancheru. Around 70 postgraduate seats in MNR Medical College and Mahaveer Institute of Medical Sciences were also cancelled, the commission said.
It may be noted that NMC teams had recently conducted a nationwide surprise inspection of colleges in March this year. This inspection was done to assess the number of faculty, infrastructure and patient inflow in the teaching hospitals. However, the NMC processed the inspection report only after the admission to UG and PG medical courses was over.
The orders for cancellation of medical seats in colleges were issued on May 19 after the completion of admission to medical courses through NEET counseling 2021-22. This has now put the students who had taken admission in these colleges in jeopardy.
After the decision, the management of three private colleges have also appealed to the NMC to withdraw its decision citing student interest. Meanwhile, many parents, who claim to have taken loans to admit their children in these colleges, are stunned by the move. Many highlighted the sudden timing of the decision that came after the conclusion of NEET counselling. Apart from this, classes have also started for first year students in some colleges.
NMC canceled UG seats in MNR College and PG seats in courses like Anatomy, Biochemistry and Ophthalmology. As per the Deccan Chronicle report, at Mahaveer College, NMC canceled admission in all PG courses including Paediatrics, Orthopedics and MD General Medicine.
