National Archery: Sukhchain Singh wins recurve title

Sukhchain Singh won the senior recurve men’s title to lead a service clean sweep in the national ranking tournament.

Top Indian archers, including Atanu Das and Deepika Kumari, crashed out of the first round after Sukhchain Singh won the senior recurve men’s title to lead a service clean sweep in the national ranking tournament here on Sunday.

The 25-year-old Army Sports Institute archer Sukhchain, who has a world ranking of 218, made his biggest upset of the day when he defeated India’s No. 1 Atanu Das 6-4 in the round of 16.

Das’s Tokyo Olympic teammates Tarundeep Rai and Pravin Jadhav also crashed out of the first round, losing to Dheeraj Bommadevara and Sachin Gupta in the shootoff.

In the final, Singh defeated his service teammate Rahul Nagarwal 6–2, while Dheeraj defeated veteran Jayant Talukdar to finish third.

In the women’s recurve category, world No. 2 Deepika Kumari suffered a shocking defeat of her career when she was beaten 7-3 by Telangana teenager Kadire Sindhuja in the first round of 16.

Sindhuja, however, lost 6-4 to Promila Dalmari of Assam in the second round.

Jharkhand’s Ankita Bhakat defeated Punjab’s Simranjit Kaur 6-4 to emerge champion in the women’s section, while Haryana’s Ridhi finished third in the playoffs.

Rajasthan’s Rajat Chauhan and PSPB’s Jyothi Surekha Vennam topped the compound men’s and women’s categories respectively.
