Ian Chappell urges Nathan Lyon not to try to copy R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja

The Indian spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have taken 31 out of 40 wickets against Australia in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023, proving how lethal they can be.

While Jadeja has picked up man-of-the-match awards in both the two Tests so far, Ashwin has been a major factor troubling the Australian batsmen, even before the start of the series. All things happened in

In contrast, the Australian spinners have so far failed to taste any success on Indian pitches, barring Nathan Lyon’s five-wicket haul in the second Test in Delhi, where India In reply to Australia’s 263, Australia were restricted to 262 in their first innings.

Young Todd Murphy has also had his moments, but they have been few and far between. Australia’s spin attack could not trouble the Indian batsmen like Ashwin and Jadeja and troubled the visitors.

Former Australia captain Ian Chappell has thus advised Australian spinners to stop trying to copy Ashwin and Jadeja, and instead try to focus on other ways of finding success.

Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, Chappell pointed out how the Indian duo hunt in pairs and they deserve massive credit for the hosts’ dominance in the subcontinent where they haven’t tasted a Test series defeat in over a decade.

“Often they (opposition spinners) try to replicate the skills (of Ashwin and Jadeja). Talking about Ashwin and Jadeja..they know what to do in India.

He further said, “Ashwin is a very good bowler, it doesn’t matter where he bowls. I have seen him bowl in Australia, he bowled very well. He is also very smart. He works with precision. That’s what he has to do. Jadeja is not too different, although he has learned a few things and improved his bowling, but he has got the skill set which is perfect for India and the two work well together.”

The Australian great highlighted how Ashwin bowled better than Jadeja in the second Test but it was the latter who picked up seven wickets as Australia were bundled out for 113 in their second innings.

“In this game, I thought Ashwin bowled well but Jadeja took seven wickets, but that’s what happens on some days. I don’t think you can come and repeat what they do. Nathan Lyon is not R Ashwin, he has to bowl like Nathan Lyon and he has tried to do that,” Chappell said.
