Naseeruddin Shah and Sean Connery in A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
In a recent interview, actor Naseeruddin Shah opened up about his experience working with late actor Sean Connery, who passed away last year.
Today is the 91st birth anniversary of Hollywood legend Sean Connery, who passed away last year. Connery was the first actor to play the iconic British Secret Service agent, James Bond. He embodied Bond and so his portrayal is considered the most definitive, right? Naseeruddin Shah, one of the most respected Indian actors, said last year when he said, “He (Connery) was the only bond.”
Naseeruddin Shah shared screen space with Connery in the 2003 film The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, directed by Stephen Norrington, released in 2003. It was an adaptation of the graphic novel written by Alan Moore and conceived by Kevin O’Neill. Shah played Captain Nemo, Connery Allen being the quarterman. While Shah did not receive much praise for his performance, he did get a chance to star alongside the Scottish legend.
He told the Times of India, “Sean Connery was the most down-to-earth star I’ve ever met. He reminded me of Jackie Shroff, who didn’t take himself too seriously for a second. He was a warm-blooded star. He was full of generous co-actors and a star of flamboyance. Some of our domestic stars should learn something from him.”
During an interview in 2019, Naseeruddin Shah was asked to share his experience of acting in Hollywood. The actor said that it looked boring as the film dragged on for months. “But I was making so much money from it that I didn’t complain too much. The film itself was unbearable; I couldn’t sit through it,” he was quoted as saying by The Hindu.
Renowned as the ultimate James Bond, Connery headlined seven espionage thrillers. He played the gentle agent so smartly that the actors who followed him struggled to fit into his suit.
