A six-time member of the state assembly from Datia district and a fourth-term cabinet minister, Mishra began his political career with the ABVP in 1977–1978.

The second most influential cabinet minister in Madhya Pradesh – Narottam Mishra, who is known to grab headlines for his controversial comments especially on issues related to “Bollywood” and “Hindutva”, seems to have changed his political stance in the last few days. There have been some changes in approach. Two months. Sources told IANS that Mishra is getting ready to take up a new role in the state BJP unit ahead of the November 2023 assembly elections.

Mishra, who celebrates his 63rd birthday on Saturday, is likely to be assigned an important post in the party’s state unit by the central leadership.

Mishra, a six-time member of the state assembly from Datia district and a four-time cabinet minister, began his political career with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Bharatiya Jana Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in 1977–1978. Currently, he holds several important portfolios in the state cabinet including Home, Law and Parliamentary Affairs. He became a cabinet minister for the first time in 2005 under former chief minister Babulal Gaur.

“The central leadership of the BJP is planning to assign a bigger role to Narottam Mishra in the party. A team of four Sangathan (organisations) of BJP has been assigned the task of conducting a survey regarding the popularity and acceptability of BJP leaders across Madhya Pradesh. Once the survey is done, the next few months could see a major change in the state BJP unit and it is no surprise that Mishra is given a key role in the assembly elections as he is a popular Brahmin. leader in the state…,” a party source told IANS.

Mishra’s rise to prominence during the last few years has successfully established his image as an important leader in the eyes of the party high command, not only in Madhya Pradesh but also in national politics. For example, under former national BJP president and current home minister, Amit Shah, he was made in-charge of the Kanpur Lok Sabha seat in 2019, keeping in mind the number of Brahmin votes in the region.

Apart from being a popular Hindutva face, Mishra also enjoys a good reputation among Muslims in the state. Over the years, especially when the BJP formed the government in the state in 2020, his statements became a regular headline in the national media. Now, since the elections are just six months away, it seems that he has made some changes in his political stand, especially among the minority community. For example, recently they organized a mega ‘Roza Iftar’ in Datia and a large number of Muslim people attended the event.

Mishra played a key role in bringing down the Kamal Nath government in 2020 through “Operation Kamal” and is also one of the reasons why the state Congress unit considers him a bigger political enemy than Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Born on April 15, 1960 in Gwalior, he is fondly addressed as “Dada” and how he earned the title was revealed by him while addressing a gathering of people in his home town recently.

“Years ago, when I first came to Datia, the locals were complaining about the water problem, but I found out there was another problem, and it was more serious. Datia was famous for gangsters. There used to be gang war like in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. But, when the people of Datia elected me as MLA for the first time, I remember that I had given a statement that from today there is only one ‘Dada’ in Datia and I started strict action against those goons. Perhaps since then the people of Datia started addressing me affectionately as Dada,” replied Mishra when someone in the crowd asked him how he earned the title.
