MANGALURU: Even as the hijab controversy has led to the closure of educational institutions in Karnatakaa video clip of a few Muslim students offering namaz inside the classroom at the Government Higher Primary School at Ankathadka in Kadaba taluk, about 50 km from here, has gone viral on social media.
The students studying in class V and VII had offered namaz inside classrooms on February 4. The incident came to light when the video clip went viral, and local residents opposed it. As soon as the information was received, officials from the education department visited the school on Friday.
According to sources, the incident of offering namaz had not come to the notice of the teachers on Friday last week. Soon after learning of the incident, teachers directed students not to engage in religious activities inside classrooms.
Parents of a few children had sought permission from the school, to allow students to visit mosques to offer prayers on Fridays. However, no permission was given to offer namaz inside the school, school authorities said.
BEO Lokesh C told TOI, “I have directed the cluster resource person (CRP) to visit the school, immediately after I received the message. I have directed the CRP to collect information and submit a report.”
