The Election Commission is expected to announce the schedule for Nagaland, Meghalaya and Tripura assembly elections at 2:30 pm today.

A 16-member Election Commission team arrived in Nagaland on Friday on a two-day visit during which it will hold meetings with leaders of various political parties and senior government officials ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. Elections are due this year for the 60-member assembly, with the term of the current government led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio ending on March 4.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday said it will ‘distribute elections’ in Nagaland as mandated by the Constitution.

Responding to media queries in the presence of Election Commissioners Anoop Chandra Pandey and Arun Goyal, Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar said, “Whatever the demands are, we will conduct the elections and it does not affect the political process.”

Naga civil society has been demanding a solution to the vexing Naga political issue before the conduct of the state elections, while the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization has announced not to participate in the election process unless a separate state made up of six eastern districts is formed.
