Nagaland Election Results: NDPP-BJP Alliance Yet to Stake Claim to Form Government

Sources in both the parties said their MLAs would unanimously hold a joint meeting with outgoing Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio before staking claim to form the government.

Despite winning a clear majority of 37 seats in the 60-member assembly in the recently concluded elections, the NDPP-BJP alliance was yet to stake claim to form the government in Nagaland.

Sources in both the parties said their MLAs would hold a joint meeting with outgoing chief minister Neiphiu Rio before staking claim to form the government.

The term of the present government ends on March 12.

Rio held a closed-door meeting with the new NDPP legislators at the party headquarters to seek their opinion on government formation.

NDPP sources said most of the newly elected MLAs are staying together till the government is formed.

BJP sources said a coordination meeting of party MLAs would be held till Sunday followed by a joint meeting with NDPP MLAs.

Of the 37 seats won by the pre-poll alliance, the NDPP won 25 and the BJP 12.

The NDPP added seven members as it won 18 seats in 2018 while the BJP maintained the same tally.

NCP won seven, NPF five, Naga People’s Front, LJP (Ram Vilas) and RPI (Athawale) two each. JD(U) won one seat, while four independents emerged victorious.
