KORAPUT: At least three gram rakhis (village guards) were killed and about 30 sustained injuries as the vehicle in which they were traveling for panchayat election duty overturned in Nabarangpur district on Friday night.
Sources said around 40 village guards were going to Kosagumuda from Nabarangpur town when the incident took place around 9pm near Sorisopodar village. The injured have been shifted to Papdahandi and Nabarangpur hospitals.
Nabarangpur superintendent of police Smit P Parmar said the gram rakhis were traveling from the reserve office to Kosagumuda block to be deployed for the third phase of the panchayat election.
“The accident took place around 4 km from Papdahandi and the injured were hastened to Papdahandi hospital. A few serious patients were referred to the district headquarters hospital,” the SP said. “The reason behind the incident is being investigated,” he added.
