Naba Kishore Das Death: Last Rites of Odisha Health Minister, Shot Dead by Cop, to be held in Jharsuguda, 3-day State Mourning Declared

New DelhiOdisha Health Minister Naba Kishore Das, who was shot dead by a mentally challenged policeman, will be cremated in his native town Jharsuguda on Monday evening with full state honours. The body of the late minister was brought to his official residence in the early hours of Monday and the state government has declared a three-day mourning across Odisha as a mark of respect to the late minister.

A government release said that there will be no official entertainment for three days from January 29-31 in the entire state. “It has been decided by the Government of Odisha that as a mark of respect, state honors will be given to the departed dignitary. The national flag will fly at half-mast on the day and day of the death in the state capital.” Cremation at the place where it takes place,” the release said.

The minister, 60, was shot at around 1 pm in Brajrajnagar town by assistant sub-inspector of police (ASI) Gopal Das, who is believed to be suffering from a mental disorder. After being airlifted from Jharsuguda to Bhubaneswar, a team of doctors from Apollo Hospital operated on the minister, but he eventually succumbed to his injuries.

Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and several other dignitaries from different walks of life on Monday paid tributes to late minister Naba Kishore Das, who was allegedly shot dead by a policeman in Brajrajnagar town of Jharsuguda district.



The chief minister, who had visited the hospital twice on Sunday during his hospitalization and after Das’s death, again on Monday morning visited the minister’s official residence where his body was kept. Both the governor and the chief minister also met Das’s family members and offered their condolences. Several ministers, MPs, MLAs, former MLAs, BJP state president Sameer Mohanty and Congress leaders also reached the official residence of Das.



The state government also presented a guard of honor to the late minister. Later, the mortal remains of the minister were taken to the BJD party office, where hundreds of people paid their last respects to Das. BJD vice-president Debi Prasad Mishra said his body would be taken to his native place Jharsuguda where he would be cremated with full state honours.
