N-E Polls: Liquor, Drugs Worth Rs 104 Crore seized from Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura, Says ECI

Voting was held on Monday for 59 of the total 60 seats in the Legislative Assemblies of Meghalaya and Nagaland. Voting for the Tripura Legislative Assembly was held on February 16.

With the completion of polling in the three states of the Northeast,… Election commission of India (ECI) on Monday said that 3,57,340 liters of liquor worth Rs 10.91 crore has been seized from Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura. Besides this, medicines worth Rs 92.94 crore have also been seized, showed data till Saturday.

ECI Joint Director (Media) Anuj Chandak said in a statement that 1.56 lakh liters worth Rs 3.2 crore were seized in Tripura. 80,833 liters of liquor worth Rs 5.09 crore has been seized in Nagaland and 1.20 lakh liters of liquor worth Rs 2.62 crore in Meghalaya. In addition, drugs worth Rs 33.25 crore have been seized from Meghalaya. Large quantities of drugs have also been seized in Nagaland (Rs 32.87 crore) and Tripura (Rs 26.82 crore).

Overall, electoral forfeiture has increased by at least 23% in Meghalaya and Nagaland, according to ECI data.

“Constant efforts have been made to monitor election expenditure due to the emphasis of Election Commission on inducement free elections. Due to coordinated efforts of enforcement agencies in Meghalaya and Nagaland, both State and Centre, extensive surveillance, marking of 34 expenditure sensitive constituencies in Meghalaya and 42 in Nagaland; Adequate deployment of field teams, both the states witnessed record seizure this time, which has surpassed the seizure made in the entire period of enforcement of MCC in assembly elections 2018,” the ECI said.

Also, for the first time, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had set up a camp office in Kohima. Some major operations have been carried out by DRI in Meghalaya and Nagaland where they have seized heroin worth Rs 17.13 crore in East Khasi Hills and Rs 15.91 crore in Chumukedima district of Nagaland.

“The total seizures in the three states of Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura as on February 27 is Rs 169.64 crore. Seizures of Rs 2.92 crore were made in the by-elections held in the states.

Voting took place in 59 out of 60 assembly seats in Meghalaya and Nagaland

Voting was held on Monday for 59 of the total 60 seats in the Legislative Assemblies of Meghalaya and Nagaland. In Meghalaya, the election in Sohyeong was postponed due to the death of one of the contesting candidates, while in Akuluto, Nagaland, only one candidate filed his nomination, so the election was not required.

Voting was peaceful on Monday at 3,419 polling stations in Meghalaya and 2,291 in Nagaland. Advance planning and extensive monitoring by the Commission under the leadership of Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar as well as ECs Anoop Chandra Pandey and Arun Goel ensured smooth conduct of elections in both the states without reporting of re-polling in any of the 5,710 polling stations.

Voting for the Tripura Legislative Assembly took place on 16 February in a largely violence-free and peaceful manner. The counting of votes in all the three states will take place on March 2.
