Varun Chakravarthy conceded 12 runs in his first over against Sunrisers Hyderabad, but made a remarkable comeback conceding just eight runs in his next three overs.

Varun Chakraborty’s expressions rarely tell you what he’s doing on the inside. There is no exaggerated celebration, no sledging of the batsmen, hardly any shouting at his fielders.

But is he as calm inside under pressure as he is?

On Thursday, he admitted that his heart was thumping when Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Nitish Rana asked him to defend 9 runs in the final over against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Chakraborty said during the post-match presentation after collecting the Player of the Match award, “My heart rate was definitely touching 200 (beats per minute), but I wanted to challenge them for longer, so That was my plan.”

Chakraborty’s night began with 12 runs off his first over and it came during a phase when SRH switched gears and looked to be favorites to chase down 172 thanks to a brilliant partnership between Aiden Markram and Henrich Klaasen .

Chakravarthy was then dropped from the attack and was later called upon in the slog overs when SRH needed 38 off 30 and lost Klaasen for 36.

The leggie’s next three overs went for just eight runs as he ended with figures of 1/20. He conceded just three runs in the 20th over in which SRH ended with 166/8.

A drizzle towards the closing stages of the contest also made catching the ball difficult. Chakraborty’s plan was to challenge the SRH batsmen with his big shots over the long range.

Obviously the ball was slipping a lot and so my best bet was the long side. That was the only thing on my mind. My first over went for 12 runs and Markram played some amazing shots. That’s how the game goes,” Chakraborty said.

Chakraborty said that he tried a lot of things in the making of the season.

“Last year, I was bowling at around 85 kmph. So I went back and tried a lot of things and I realized that once my speed drops, my speed drops. So I worked on my pace and that really helped.”
