Ruckus continues in Karnataka school over Muslim girls wearing hijab. There has been a political uproar over this issue in other parts of the country as well. Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai has expressed concern over the matter. At the same time, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi has called it a matter of girl’s choice. Here, the hijab has become a matter of debate on social media. One section says that education for girls is definitely not hijab, while another group believes that wearing hijab should be the choice of girls. Moving beyond the question of education and writing, this matter has now taken a political color.

Is hijab necessary for girls or education? Is wearing hijab compulsory in Muslim religion? Is it right or wrong to wear religious clothes in universities and colleges? Read, Bhaskar Woman’s report groping some such questions…

Girls are studying so let them breathe freely

Uttar Pradesh Congress leader Mahrun Nisha says that how girls live, what they wear should be their decision, not anyone else’s. It is in the religion that you have to cover your head and stay. When it comes to education and if wearing a hijab is not allowed in university, wear it outside, don’t go inside. If girls are studying, then let them breathe freely. Judgments should not be imposed on them.

There is a rule of veil in Islam…
On the uproar over hijab, Maulana Ansar Raza, chairperson of Delhi’s Garib Nawaz Foundation, says that education is also necessary and hijab too. If there is a law within the university that one should not wear the hijab, then it should be respected. In Islam, women are asked to show respect, to remain in veils, but this choice should be made by girls. They should not be forced in any way.

There is no mention of dress code in Islam.
On this, Proctor of Muslim Aligarh University (AMU), Prof. Mohammad Wasim Ali says that there is no mention of dress code anywhere in Islam. It is only said that women should wear such clothes which do not expose the body. Talking about the AMU campus, except law and medical students, other students come wearing clothes of their own choice, he said. Dress code is prescribed for law and medical colleges.

Professor Dr. Indu of the English Department of Banaras Hindu University says that both students and teachers can come here wearing clothes of their choice. Only the women of Arabic and Urdu department come wearing hijab. The rest of the teachers and students wear salwar-suits, saris, jeans, long skirts.

Why do men control women’s clothing?
Ranjana Kumari, who fought for women’s rights, says that what has happened in Karnataka is very wrong. Hijab or veil both are wrong. Men have been controlling the clothes of women which is totally wrong. Whether it is Hindu or Muslim, women have been humiliated in the name of religion. After all how long will this last? If there is a dress code of the college then it should be followed.

How did the Hijab controversy start?
The controversy over the hijab started in Udupi, Karnataka on January 1, after which protests started in many districts including Shimoga. 28 Muslim girl students of Kundapura College in Karnataka were stopped from attending class wearing hijab. Regarding the matter, the girls had filed a petition in the High Court saying that hijab is mandatory in Islam, so they should be allowed it. These girls had also started dharna sitting in front of the college gate.
In response to the girls wearing the hijab, some Hindu organizations asked boys to wear saffron shawls on the college campus. At the same time, in Hubli, Shri Ram Sena had said that those who are demanding burqa or hijab can go to Pakistan. He also said that by wearing hijab, is an attempt being made to make India Pakistan or Afghanistan?
