Mumbaikars To Now Receive Weather Updates On Phones During Monsoon

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday said that citizens in Mumbai will get weather information on their mobile phones through SMS during monsoon. BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal on Tuesday chaired a meeting with various agencies on disaster management as a preparation for the monsoon. Officials from BEST, MMRDA, MSRDC, PWD, Mumbai Metro, Railways, NDRF, IMD, MHADA and other agencies attended the meeting.

“During the emergency an SMS alert will be sent to the citizens,” the BMC said.

The District Disaster Management Department has set up a control room to provide timely alerts regarding weather conditions and has a mechanism in place to provide real time weather alerts.

The release said Chahal directed all departments and agencies to expedite coordination to mitigate potential challenges during the monsoon.

For the smooth functioning of suburban trains, which are used by over 70 lakh people daily, Chahal directed the BMC’s horticulture department to complete pruning of trees in railway premises by the end of May.

De-watering pumps will be installed at 480 locations in Mumbai where waterlogging may occur during heavy rainfall and these pumps will also be monitored by CCTV cameras.

After May 15, no digging of roads will be allowed in Mumbai except in case of emergency.

Stating that the BMC has reserved 3,000 beds to accommodate patients of monsoon-related ailments, the BMC has now arranged five schools in each ward in case of emergencies like heavy rains to provide shelter to citizens. Will be

Chahal said that notice should be given to the occupants of the dangerous buildings to vacate and alternative arrangements should be made for their stay. According to the order of the High Court, water supply should be stopped in such dangerous buildings.

Accordingly, Municipal Commissioner Chahal instructed to take necessary measures by proper coordination at the District Collectorate level. He also asked to make a policy for the construction of security walls.

BMC was informed that NDRF has constituted three teams for monsoon related emergency in Mumbai. Additionally, an additional team will be deployed in the eastern suburbs.

The Indian Navy has also informed about its teams and divers who will be ready for emergency response, the release said. Chahal also directed the Mumbai Fire Brigade to be on alert for any emergency.
