New Delhi: Delhi and Mumbai both recorded over 10,000 Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, as India continued to register a surge in infections driven by omicron Type.
Delhi recorded 10,665 Covid cases on Wednesday, the highest since May 12 and eight deaths. Mumbai reported 15,166 fresh Covid-19 infections, its highest daily count and three deaths.

On Tuesday, Delhi had registered 5,481 Covid cases, almost half of Wednesday’s count. The positivity rate in Delhi has gone up to 11.88 percent.
The Delhi government has announced a weekend curfew to curb the sharp rise in cases, Health Minister Satyendar Jain said as the third Covid wave had begun in the national capital.
The Delhi government has directed private hospitals to reserve 40 percent beds for Kovid patients.
According to official data, Delhi has seen a significant jump in the number of Covid-related deaths as well as hospitalisations, PTI reported.
The latest government data shows that the number of patients in the city’s hospitals rose from 247 on January 1 to 531 on January 4. In the last three days, the number of patients on oxygen support has also increased from 94 to 168 and the number of patients has also increased. PTI reported that the support on ventilators has increased from four to 14.
Mumbai sees highest single-day increase in Covid cases
Mumbai on Wednesday witnessed a 39 per cent rise in daily Covid-19 cases, with 15,166 new cases being reported in 24 hours.
On Tuesday, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar said that the city will be under lockdown if the daily Covid-19 cases cross the 20,000-mark.
Maharashtra on Wednesday reported 26,538 new Covid-19 cases and eight deaths. Active cases have increased to 87,505 even after 5,331 people were discharged. The state’s Omicron tally stood at 797, which included 330 recoveries.
