Mumbai registers highest growth in data centres: Knight Frank report

The data center market has experienced strong momentum in 2021 with Mumbai recording the largest supply growth. Nearly 200MW was added in Q3 (July to September) 2021, a growth of 24 per cent in a quarter.

Knight Frank, in its Data Center Report, 2021, said that co-location supply in Mumbai has increased significantly in the first three quarters of this year, with the city’s total IT capacity crossing the gigawatt mark (along with Shanghai and Tokyo in the Asia Pacific). has done.

The total IT capacity in Mumbai increased from 812MW in Q2 to 1,006MW by Q3-end.

The report also said, the quarterly take-up of IT Power in Mumbai increased from 2.78 MW in Q2 2021 to 6.42 MW in Q3 2021, the highest quarterly take-up on record.

The Indian data center market currently has an estimated 445 MW of critical IT capacity in seven cities namely Mumbai, NCR, Bengaluru, Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata.

According to Shishir Baijal, Chairman and Managing Director, Knight Frank India, as the demand for digital infrastructure accelerates, so will data centers.

“The digital economy in India is projected to grow to $1 trillion by 2025; data centers are an integral part of this growth story, which has only gathered steam since the start of the pandemic and its associated disruptions,” he said.

EMEA Markets

The Knight Frank report said 2021 brought uncertainty after a quick buy-cycle of the initial COVID response in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) market. After some steady growth in Q1 and Q2, the third quarter saw a decline in new supply additions. Total supply for the EMEA region increased by about 200MW, compared to 400MW in Q2 and only 300MW in Q1.

APAC Markets

On the other hand, the APAC region saw a significant uptick in growth and deal making activity in the third quarter of 2021.

During the quarter Vantage Data Center announced the acquisition of its Agile data center business – approximately 170MW in key markets of Tokyo, Osaka and Melbourne – and PCCW’s 100MW of data center portfolio in Hong Kong and Malaysia.

Total supplies (live, phased out and under construction) at APAC increased by approximately 500MW in Q3, bringing total capacity in the region to over 7,500MW. Take-up was over 100MW, which is in line with the quarterly average for the full 2021 so far.
