Mumbai: DB Marg Police On Monday, a 42-year-old thug was arrested for duping a gullible man at an ATM kiosk in south Mumbai.
When the victim was withdrawing cash from an ATM kiosk, the accused present in the cabin saw the victim’s password, asked him to re-insert the card, saying that the transaction was incomplete and later withdrew the money by entering the password.
The accused is facing 12 cases of similar fraud in different South Mumbai Police station.
The complainant, Tanwar Shaikh (31), who deals in electronic items, approached the police on July 15.
He has said in his complaint that when he went to someone to withdraw money ATM Center, she found a man already there.
He told the police that when he completed his transaction, the person in the cabin told him that the transaction was not completed and that he should re-insert his card into the machine to complete the process.
Believing his words, the victim again inserted her card and took it back. Soon after exiting the cabin and crossing the road, he received an SMS saying that Rs 15,000 had been withdrawn from his card. The complainant returned to the spot and saw his ‘assistant’ going on a bike. He asked him to stop but the man got on his bike.
Senior Inspector Pradeep Khude – A team of officers Raja Bikdar and Pradeep Patil started investigation into the matter. The police took the suspect Sarfaraz Khan into custody from Agripada on Monday night.
“During interrogation, we came to know that he has committed similar frauds at different places. Three cases against Khan in Agripada police station, two cases each in Pydhonie police station, Nagpada police station, VP Road police station and one- A case has been registered. db route, Dongri and MRA Marg Police Station. The accused was produced in the court and sent to three-day police custody.
Khan used to target his victims at ATM kiosks, which have old machines and where a debit card is generated before entering the password.
“We have found the same pattern in their modus operandi. People should be careful while withdrawing money from ATM centres. They should ensure that no one sees their password. People like Khan engage unheard people in conversation and cheat them,” said an official.
