Mumbai: In the 17.5 kg gold theft case, LT Marg Police has arrested 10 accused including the employee of the complainant jeweler. The investigation was spread over three states; Rajasthan, Gujarat and MP. Investigators have collectively recovered 89% of the stolen gold jewelery worth Rs 7.12 crore.
All the 10 accused from Rajasthan were arrested in a span of one week.
The FIR was lodged by jeweler Khushal Tamka on January 14. His father passed away on January 9 and hence he was not going to office in Bhuleshwar near Crawford Market. His employee, 21-year-old Ganesh Kumar Dewasi, lived in the office.
When Tamka reached the office on the morning of January 14, he saw the door open and 17.5 kg of gold ornaments worth Rs 8.19 crore were missing from the cupboard. Dewasi, who had been working in the office for the last six months, was also missing. FIR was lodged. During investigation, the police found that the accused had also taken the DVR of the CCTV with them.
Upon scanning the CCTV footage of the nearby area, police found Dewasi and his associate, 21-year-old Ramesh Prajapati, who worked in a nearby clothing shop, carrying three bags from the building. Later on, three more joined him on the way.
The accused had booked a private cab and traveled till Borivali. There, they left the cab and got into a waiting car hired by the accused. Then they went to Palanpur in Gujarat and then to Rajasthan where they distributed the ornaments and left separately. Two teams of police had gone to Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan to nab the accused.

“Out of the stolen gold, Dewasi took 6.8 kg of gold for about Rs 2.8 crore and Prajapati also stole gold as his share. Devasi had given his gold to Prajapati to hide. Prajapati had dug a pit in the field near his house in Rajasthan. He had hidden a bag full of cash and two men’s share of gold in the field. Gold and cash worth Rs 4.15 crore have been recovered from the farm,” said a police officer.
“While the police were searching for Dewasi’s house in Rajasthan’s Sirohi village, they made a video call to the police station in Mumbai, where one of the arrested accused was brought on the line and told the police team in Rajasthan to visit Dewasi. delivered to the residence.
