Bareilly: A 36-year-old man boarded a flight and landed, while passing the stringent security check of the Mumbai airport, allegedly using forged documents. Uttar Pradesh‘s Bareilly On a ticket issued in the name of his friend– who had fallen ill and canceled the journey.
Aslam Ismail Lala, 36, was finally caught two days later on Tuesday night, when he tried to board a return flight to Mumbai using the same documents.
Aslam Lala forged his PAN and Aadhar cards to become Ashfaq Nawab Sheikh, who was the real flier.
During the search, the police in Bareilly found two Aadhar cards from him – one for his own and one in the name of Ashfaq Shaikh.
Lala was handed over to Bareilly Police.
During interrogation, he admitted to forging documents to use Sheikh’s travel pass. Senior police officers contacted their counterparts in Mumbai to verify Lala’s credentials. Mumbai officials were also probing the matter.
After preliminary investigation, they found that Shaikh, a resident of Andheri in Mumbai, and three others had booked flight tickets to attend the Urus of a Sufi saint at a famous pilgrimage center in Bareilly.
“However, a day before his visit, Shaikh fell ill and decided to stay back. Since the tickets were non-refundable, it was decided to carry Aslam Lala, a resident of Navi Mumbai, on Sheikh’s boarding pass. Shaikh shared his PAN and Aadhaar cards which were scanned to produce a look-alike copy with Lala’s picture.
Bareilly Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rohit Singh Sajwan said Lala then managed to dodge the security officials at the Mumbai airport and boarded the flight to Bareilly on Sunday.
Urus concluded on Tuesday. Lala, along with other members of the group, reached Bareilly airport at night to board the return flight. But, this time, he was not as lucky.
SSP Sajwan told TOI, “We have done a thorough investigation and found that Lala had come on a flight ticket booked in Shaikh’s name to attend the Urus in Bareilly. Since Shaikh had withdrawn his name from the trip due to medical reasons, the group did not want the tickets to be wasted as they were non-refundable. Then Lala forged documents, which is a crime. He has been booked under IPC sections 420 (cheating), 467 (making documents), 468 (forgery with intent to defraud), 471 (dishonestly making original use of forged documents).
