Speaking to TOI Online, members of Dadar Market Association (DMA) said that some shopkeepers are forced to break the rules as they are left with no other option
“For the last one-and-a-half years, our source of revenue has stopped due to the pandemic. There are only expenses like salaries of employees, property tax, rent and other expenses. Hence, shopkeepers are left with no option but to break the law,” DMA’s Deepak Devrukhkar said.
He also alleged that some areas are flouting the rules from day one and instead those who follow the rules and regulations have been punished.
He said, “If the situation remains like this, you will see suicides in Mumbai like farmers. 35 per cent of the shops, commercial spaces are vacant as no one is ready to pay or buy rent as there is not much business on weekdays. Most people, even those who are working from home, are busy throughout the week and they too have been urging shops to remain open on weekends.”
“Our only demand is that the government should allow us to keep shops open from 9 am to 6 pm instead of keeping them closed on weekends,” Devrukhkar said.
The association will also submit a letter to the Chief Minister requesting him to look into the issue.
“It is a question of our survival, we have suffered a lot. It will not be easy for us. If the restrictions are not reviewed, some shopkeepers have also said that they will keep the shops open and face action (if it comes to that).”
