Mullaperiyar dam issue: Kerala government cancels tree cutting order

The Kerala government on Wednesday revoked an order allowing Tamil Nadu to cut down 15 trees below the Baby Dam in the Mullaperiyar reservoir. On arriving at the decision to cancel, a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also suspended Chief Wildlife Warden Benichan Thomas, who had reportedly prepared the order after a meeting of the secretaries concerned.

The Kerala government was criticized by the opposition Congress-led UDF for its controversial order allowing felling of trees in the state assembly.
