BSP MLA Mukhtar Ansari, arrested for his alleged involvement in several criminal cases, on Monday approached a Barabanki court to provide television in his jail barracks. Ansari filed the petition while appearing before Barabanki Chief Judicial Magistrate Rakesh via video conference for extension of his judicial custody in the forgery case.

A forgery case related to registration of a bulletproof ambulance allegedly used by Ansari to move between Ropar Jail in Punjab and various courts in the state. Ansari’s lawyer Randhir Singh Suman said his client told the court that the government has made provisions for television in jail barracks across the state to facilitate prison inmates to watch news and entertainment programmes.

But the Uttar Pradesh government is treating Ansari step-motherly, depriving him of a basic civic facility in jail, his lawyer alleged. Meanwhile, the court extended Ansari’s judicial custody till July 5 in the case of fake registration of ambulances.

Ansari also requested the court to direct the Banda Jail to provide him physiotherapy every day in the jail to keep away his orthopedic problems. He said that despite his repeated requests, the Banda Jail Authority has denied him this essential medical aid. After being brought from Ropar Jail in Punjab, Ansari was lodged in Banda Jail in UP as an undertrial prisoner in several criminal cases.
