Muharram procession banned in UP

Lucknow: In Uttar Pradesh, the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led government has announced that no procession will be allowed on the occasion of Muharram in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Uttar Pradesh’s Directorate General of Police (DGP) Mukul Goel has issued guidelines announcing that people will not be allowed to gather and take out mourning processions in the state.

He has directed the police officers of all districts to take clerics, peace committees and other community leaders into confidence, while ensuring that the COVID-19 norms are not violated.

Apart from this, the police personnel have been instructed to keep a strict vigil all over Uttar Pradesh, especially in areas where disputes have been reported in the past.

The DGP has also ordered for deployment of adequate number of police personnel in sensitive areas.

“Adequate number of police PAC force reserves should be maintained in every district. Make a plan and rehearse to deal with every situation,” the directions issued.

Emphasizing that no weapon display is allowed during Muharram, the DGP has directed the police officers to take preventive action against anti-social elements and keep a check on social media.

Muharram is celebrated by the Shia Muslim community.
