Michael Vaughan reckons RCB players could have waited to celebrate after meeting MS Dhoni who may have played the final professional match of his career on Saturday night.
Michael Vaughan reckons that Royal Challengers Bengaluru players could have the ‘decency’ to delay their celebrations after beating Chennai Super Kings to go and greet legendary MS Dhoni who may have played the final match of his playing career.
While Dhoni hasn’t made announcement yet, it’s speculated that the India icon will hang up his boots after the conclusion of IPL 2024. With CSK eliminated after playing their final match of the season, it’s uncertain whether the wicketkeeper-batter will be seen in action again next year.
“RCB have a huge amount of support but they also wind up a lot of people and I saw a lot of it tonight. I get it (the celebration), they have never been in a position where they won the IPL,” Vaughan said on Cricbuzz.
Vaughan then added that Saturday night was the perfect time for RCB players to not have any regrets later on should Dhoni indeed decide that he has played the final match of his career.
“If there ever was a time for a group of players to show awareness. We don’t know but if that was MS Dhoni’s last game and those players run around the ground doing handstands when all they need is to wait and meet the legend. We have to just go and shake his hands and then we can do a few cartwheels and handstands,” the former England captain said.
“This is an iconic player. I wouldn’t want to be an RCB player tomorrow morning thinking, ‘Wait a minute, MS Dhoni has announced retirement and we didn’t have the decency to go and shake his hand first’,” he added.
It was a do-or-die clash for RCB as they were in a must-win situation against CSK.
Needing to win by at least 18 runs, RCB batted first to post 218/5 in 20 overs at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
The Faf du Plessis-led side then overcame Rachin Ravindra’s quickfire half-century and a late blitz led by Ravindra Jadeja and Dhoni to secure a 27-run win and qualify for the playoffs.
