mpmmcc: Radionuclide Cancer Therapy Begins In Kashi | Varanasi News – Times of India

Varanasi: Cancer patients of eastern Uttar Pradesh will no longer need to go to other cities for radionuclide therapy, as Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Cancer Center (MPMMCC) and Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital (HBCH) here have started radionuclide therapy for cancer patients. With the beginning of this service, MPMMCC , HBCH have become the first such centers in Purvanchal for the same. This therapy plays an important role in treating thyroid cancer, neuroendocrine tumors, neuroblastoma, and many other cancers where surgery is not possible.
The hospital authorities said that the new facilities and services were being introduced from time to time at MPMMCC and HBCH to facilitate treatment for cancer patients of UP and neighboring states. Under this, now the facility of radionuclide therapy will also be available for the patients suffering from cancer.
Explaining the importance of the therapy, Dr. Varun Shukla of Nuclear Medicine, MPMMCC and HBCH, said: “There are many types of therapies coming under radionuclide therapy. It mainly includes radio-iodine therapy, PSMA therapy, MIBG, Dota-Tate and Samarium. Radioiodine therapy is important in the treatment of thyroid cancer while Dota-tate is for neuroendocrine tumors, MIBG is for neuroblastoma and paraganglioma, samarium is for bone related cancer and the PSMA therapy plays an important role in the treatment of prostate cancer when hormonal therapy does not work.”
Underlining the role of iodine therapy in the treatment of cancer involving the thyroid gland, he further explained that when cancer occurs in the thyroid gland, the cancer is removed through surgery, but sometimes cancer occurs in such parts or parts of the thyroid gland which cannot be removed through surgery.
“Radioiodine ablation therapy is very effective in such patients. Under radioiodine ablation therapy, a medicine is given to the patient to kill the remaining cells of thyroid cancer. It also helps to kill cancer cells left after the surgery not only in the thyroid gland, but also in other parts of the body,” he said.
Director of MPMMCC & HBCH Dr. Satyajit Pradhan, said, “We are committed to provide quality treatment to cancer patients of Uttar Pradesh and neighboring states. To further strengthen this commitment, we have introduced radionuclide therapy in the hospital. In the coming days more, new facilities will be started in the hospital to facilitate cancer treatment.”
Adding another new service at the hospital, the facility of blood irradiator has been started at Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital, Lahartara. Head of Transfusion Medicine, Dr. Akshay Batra, said that blood irradiation is very important for bone marrow transplantation. It helps to inactivate the T cells found in the blood, which can avoid the side effects of blood-borne diseases in transplant patients,” he added.
