Ahead of the rural body elections in Madhya Pradesh, the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government restored the administrative powers of the village panchayat chiefs, almost 12 days after these rights were stripped.
The decision restores former Sarpanches to positions of power at the Gram Panchayat, Janpad Panchayat and Zilla Panchayat levels. In a democracy, all work is done by the power of the people, so I am restoring the powers of pradhans (sarpanches), CM Shivraj said on Monday.
Chouhan made this announcement during a virtual meeting with the administrative committee and sarpanches. He told the people’s representatives that due to the delay in Panchayat elections, they had got the rights earlier and it is a known fact that public representatives are accountable to the public, administrative committees were formed and you were appointed as president and secretary. Gone.
Urging the public representatives to initiate social harmony and work collectively for the progress of the villages, he claimed that Panchayat elections may take time. He said that it may be delayed by two months out of four. Seeking the support of these public representatives, Chouhan asked them to help in controlling Kovid-19. He said that he has to take care of the Kovid-19 crisis committees of the village.
Sources claim that the panchayat elections are getting delayed and the sarpanches whose term has expired were upset after the state government stripped them of administrative powers and the ruling party felt that their displeasure could spoil the planning for panchayat elections. .
The Congress parry attacked the ruling BJP for obvious reasons. Party’s chief spokesperson KK Mishra claimed whether this circus is going on in Madhya Pradesh. First the state government gives them powers, then takes them back and restores power again.
Former Congress minister Sajjan Singh Verma condemned the move, saying the BJP was apprehensive of the displeasure of its supporting sarpanches, so it restored power after widespread protests in the villages.
Temporary arrangement for seven years
Since panchayat elections are getting delayed time and again, the secretary and former sarpanch are running temporary arrangements for the panchayats. The Panchayat and Rural Development Department had issued an order on January 4, empowering the secretaries and former sarpanches to jointly operate the bank accounts of the panchayats. The orders were applicable to Janpad and Zilla Panchayats. However, an order issued on 5 January withdrew these powers.
Since the assembly elections are due in the year 2023, the ruling BJP is leaving no stone unturned to put up an impressive performance in the panchayat elections.
