MP: Digvijay Singh jailed for one year in case of clash with BJYM workers, got bail

A court in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore district on Saturday sentenced six people, including Congress leader Digvijay Singh, to one year’s rigorous imprisonment for clashing with protesting workers of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in 2011. Anant Narayan, Jaisingh Darbar, Aslam Lala and Dilip Choudhary were convicted under section 325 of the IPC. Mahesh Parmar (Congress MLA from Tarana), Mukesh Bhati and Hemant Chauhan were acquitted for lack of evidence. The court also imposed a fine of five thousand rupees on each of the culprits. After getting bail, Singh told reporters that he would appeal against the conviction.

“My name was also not mentioned as an accused in the original FIR. Police later added my name to the list of accused under political pressure,” he alleged. Singh and Guddu’s lawyer Rahul Sharma said they were accused of instigating others to beat up BJYM worker Ritesh Khabia. “Prosecution documents show that Khabia had an injury to his right hand, but the fact remains that he had a fractured left arm,” he said. According to police, BJYM workers tried to show black flags to Singh on July 17, 2011, when his convoy was passing through Jiwajiganj area of ​​Ujjain, leading to a clash.
