Police had said on Friday that four people had allegedly entered the mine at Dhanpuri, about 28 km from the district headquarters, with the intention of collecting coal or scrap, and died due to poisonous gas.

A day after four people died after entering an abandoned underground coal mine in Madhya Pradesh’s Shahdol, three more bodies were recovered on Saturday, a police official said.

Police had said on Friday that four people had allegedly entered the mine at Dhanpuri, about 28 km from the district headquarters, with the intention of collecting coal or scrap, and died due to poisonous gas.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mukesh Vaish told PTI that after receiving three missing complaints in police stations in the area, it was suspected that there could be more people in the abandoned mine.

“A rescue team from the local colliery and police reached the spot and launched a five-hour long search operation, which led to the recovery of three bodies on Saturday evening. They have been identified as Rohit Kol, Rajesh Mishra and Manoj Barman.”

On Friday, Superintendent of Police Kumar Prateek had said that four deaths occurred between 10 pm and 11 pm on Thursday. The deceased have been identified as Raj Mahto (20), Hazari Kol (30), Rahul Kol (23) and Kapil Vishwakarma (21), all residents of Dhanpuri.

He had said that the preliminary investigation showed that the people died due to poisonous gas emanating from the closed mine.

According to nearby residents, the opening of the mine has been sealed with bricks and cement, but some try to enter with iron rods etc. in search of coal or scrap.
