Mother-son going home from Holi festival dies in road accident

An SUV rammed an autorickshaw on south Delhi’s Barapullah flyover on Friday evening, killing a 13-year-old boy and his mother, besides injuring two of his family members and the driver, police said. An engineering student has been arrested in connection with the case, he said.

Police said that the incident happened at around 8.30 pm on Baba Banda Singh Bahadur flyover. The families were returning home from Holi celebrations when a Tata Nexon car rammed the autorickshaw and the occupants fled the spot. The car also hit another vehicle.

DCP Southeast Isha Pandey said that they have arrested the man who allegedly drove the vehicle to Noida Sector 78 resident Mukul Tomar (21). “He was going from Dwarka to Noida with his two friends in his vehicle and was driving at high speed. , When he reached the middle of Barapullah flyover, he rammed an auto and another car,” she said.

The occupants of the auto were identified as Waqar Alam (25), the driver, Janak Janardan (45), his wife Geeta and their two sons Karthik (18) and Karan (13).

Sunil Bhatt, Geeta’s brother-in-law, said, ‘Went to celebrate Holi at a relative’s house in Malviya Nagar on Friday morning. He said that they were returning to their home in West Vinod Nagar. On Friday evening, Geeta, who later succumbed to her injuries, shared pictures from her Holi celebrations earlier in the day.

The autorickshaw was completely damaged in the collision. A senior police officer from Southeast district said, “Janardhan’s family and Alam were taken to AIIMS Trauma Center and other nearby hospitals. The doctors declared Karan dead on arrival.

Janardhan, who had no serious injuries, was discharged on Saturday, said Sunil, who was waiting at the hospital for the post-mortem to be completed.

“We were informed around 3 am on Saturday. We were told that Karan died on the spot and Geeta died soon after being brought to the hospital. The driver of the autorickshaw was also admitted with a fracture,” he said.

Karthik is still undergoing treatment at AIIMS. “He has a cervical fracture on his head and doctors have said that he is likely to be under observation for two days, though he is out of danger,” Sunil said.

Sunil said that Karan studies in Class VIII, while Kartik is a Class XII student in a school in Preet Vihar. He said Janardan works in a publishing service in Noida and Geeta was a homemaker.

The family is originally from Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand and was living in Delhi for nearly 20 years.
