He was born on 8 July 1914 in a prosperous middle-class family in East Bengal (now Bangladesh). He studied at a Catholic school and St. Xavier’s College in Calcutta. After this he studied law in London. Due to ties with communist leaders like Rajni Pam Dutt, he joined the Communist Party of India in 1930. In 1957, he was elected the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Jyoti Basu was elected the Chief Minister in the 1977 elections.
