On this day in 1979, some Iranian students supporting the Iranian Revolution took 66 American diplomats and employees hostage at the US Embassy in Tehran. He was led by Ayatollah Khomeini. Some people were released two weeks later, while eight American citizens escaped with Canadian help. Iranian leaders refused to release 52 people.
America tried to rescue them with the help of soldiers, but the mission failed. In this 8 American soldiers died. On January 20, 1981, 444 days later, all American hostages were released after Iran returned $8 billion in assets confiscated in the US. (Read other incidents that happened today)
