On this day in 1979, some Iranian students supporting the Iranian Revolution took 66 American diplomats and employees hostage at the US Embassy in Tehran. He was led by Ayatollah Khomeini. Some people were released two weeks later, while eight American citizens escaped with Canadian help. Iranian leaders refused to release 52 people.
