More institutes applied for NIRF 2021, yet top positions remain with familiar colleges

Number of Higher Educational Institutions that have applied for Indian Ranking Index – National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2021 has gone up, yet in almost all categories it is the familiar colleges that remain at the top.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras secured the first position in the overall category third year in a row. It has also topped the engineering category for the sixth time in a row. Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru has topped the university category as well as the newly launched research institute category.

Jamia Hamdard topped the list for the third consecutive year in the pharmacy discipline. Miranda College retained its first position among colleges for the fifth consecutive year. IIT-Roorkee superseded IIT-Kharagpur for architecture and topped the list for the first time.

National Law School of India University, Bangalore has retained its first position in law for the fourth year in a row. Colleges in Delhi dominated the ranking of colleges with five out of the first 10 colleges in Delhi. Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Manipal secured first position in Dental category.

In the sixth consecutive edition of India Ranking of Indian Higher Education Institutions, there has been an increase in applications. National Accreditation Board Chairman KK Aggarwal said, “It is worth noting that the number of applications has increased in the time of pandemic. We have seen a total increase of 1604 in unique institute applications.”

As per the note shared by the ministry, a total of 4030 unique institutes submitted themselves for the Indian Ranking 2021. This includes both overall as well as discipline-based rankings.

A total of 6272 applications were made by these 4,030 unique applicant institutions for ranking under various categories/domains. This includes 1657 institutes in total category, 1143 in engineering, 659 in management, 351 in pharmacy, 120 in law, 111 in medicine, 78 in architecture and 1802 in general degree colleges.

The number of unique applicants for the India Ranking has increased from 2,426 in 2016 to 4,030 in 2021, while the total number of applications for the ranking in various categories has increased from 3,565 in 2016 to 6,272 in 2021. This represents an increase of 1604 (66) in total. % increase in unique institutions) and 2707 (76%) in total applicants.

At the launch, Pradhan urged “developing a regional ranking framework” and said, “NEP provides us with an opportunity to internationalize our education system. We need to bring more institutions under our ranking framework and help India achieve greater success.” Must work collectively to establish itself as a preferred global study destination.

Pradhan and Agarwal pointed out in their press briefing that when NIRF was started in 2016, rankings were announced for only a few categories such as university category and three domain-specific rankings, namely engineering, management and pharmacy institutions.

“In six years, there have been three new categories along with five new topic domains, which now brings the total categories to four,” Agarwal said. It includes, in total, universities, colleges and research institutes and seven disciplines, namely engineering, management, pharmacy, architecture, medicine, law and dentistry in 2021. Research institutes have been ranked in India Ranking 2021 for the first time.

Applicants were judged on five parameters which have sub-parameters. A total of 16 – 18 sub-parameters are used for the ranking of HEIs in different categories and subject domains in 2021. “In addition to the parameters used for the overall category, the following two additional sub-parameters were included in the newly developed methodology for ranking institutions under Research Institutes – included in the first quartile of the Journal Citation Report (JCRQ1) research papers published in the journals; and H Index,” the statement said.

Data provided by the applicant institutions as well as third party sources of data have been used wherever possible.
