Months Before Meghalaya Assembly Polls, 2 NPP MLAs, One from TMC Resign, Likely to Join BJP

Months before the Meghalaya Assembly elections, two MLAs from the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) and Trinamool Congress MLA HM Shangpliang resigned from their legislative posts. He is likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), an ally in the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance.

“We have submitted our resignations from our respective assembly seats. All three of us are planning to join the BJP and very soon, we will join the party and the intention of joining the party is that all three of us have one mind and that is the development of the state,” said Shangpliang.

Refusing to say anything about NPP, he further said that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi things can change.

“We feel and we believe that things will change for Meghalaya. Look at the unemployment we are facing in the state. When the Chief Minister of Assam can distribute 25,000 appointment letters in a single day why can’t we Can? What is stopping Meghalaya to not be able to issue such appointment letters to our youth? So, it is BJP again and PM Modi’s ideology is to give employment to the youth, rice and houses to the rural poor to provide and also help the farmers,” the TMC MLA said.

According to Assembly Commissioner and Secretary Andrew Simmons, NPP MLAs Ferlin Sangma and Benedik Marak, and TMC’s HM Shangpliang submitted their resignations to Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh during the day, which was accepted after about two hours, PTI reported. Ferlin Sangma represented Selsela in the state assembly while Marak was elected from Raxamgre. After the resignation of three members, the strength of the 60-member assembly was reduced to 57.

Currently, NPP has 21 MLAs, UDP 8, PDF 4, BJP 2, HSPDP two and seven independents, while opposition TMC has 11, KNM one and NCP one.
