Monsoon session will start from next week Speaker Om Birla reviews preparations for Lok Sabha

The Monsoon Session of Parliament will start from July 19 and will continue till August 13, with a total working day of 19 days. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla reviewed the preparations ahead of the start of the monsoon session on Monday.

The last three sessions were hit by the pandemic, however, the attendance of ministers was huge.

For the monsoon session, MPs who have received one or both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine do not need a virus test.

Speaker Birla said that both the Houses of Parliament will work together between 11 am and 6 pm with full adherence to the COVID protocols and guidelines including social distancing, facemasks.

The Custodians of both Houses of Parliament have urged members to self-vaccinate if they have not done so yet and avoid any kind of crowding within Parliament or premises.

Lawmakers have been asked to avoid the use of papers for conducting business as much as possible and instead turn to the digital medium. The Lok Sabha has also made arrangements to allow members to digitally sign in for their attendance through an app. 311 MPs of Lok Sabha have been fully vaccinated.

Eleven MPs have not taken a single dose for medical reasons. All the employees of the secretariat have reportedly been vaccinated.

The leaders of all the lower houses will meet the Speaker on Sunday to discuss the issue of smooth conduct of the monsoon session.

Chairman Birla said that 36 posts have become vacant in the committees after the existing members became ministers.

“As of now 92% notices are being sent by MPs in the form of e-notices, so we urge MPs to send it 100% paper free questions,” Birla said.

The Lok Sabha is in the process of developing an application to make it easier for MPs and others to access all the information of the House on mobile phones.
